Years ago there was a 6-year-old runner on my mixed soccer team. She stayed after practice and ran loop after loop around the soccer field with her father. She eventually became about the 2nd best high school runner in the entire Washington, DC area, before she faded with over-use injuries.
I met Alan Webb for about 5 minutes once at a race registration (the Reston 10 Miler). He said he never ran as far as 10 miles. That was in high school. He may be running longer distances at U. of Michigan, but his high school coach was very careful to ensure that Alan would have a future.
So there are two exmaples of runners who were great at the high school level. Only one survived to achieve fame in college, and that runner limited his distance (but not his speed) running while in high school.
