As a 55-year-old guy, I think your solution in appropriate. Just reduce your distance and pace until you feel better.
You will know that you have recovered when, after finishing your short or slow run, you find that you can run one more mile at your old pace. When you can do that, resume your twice-a-week schedule of 10 milers.
