I keep a box of marathon stuff in my closet. This includes everything that I would absolutely need at a marathon, such as my chip, NipGuards, tights, gloves, hats, sunglasses, new socks, body lubrication, tissues, etc.
In that marathon box is a bag with my 12 metals. I also keep my bib numbers, hoping to someday get a really low number. My numbers to date range from 2 digits to 6 digits.
I initially bought an 8"x10" picture of every marathon. I would have liked to continue that practice. However, at NYC01, everytime I passed a photograher, he or she was changing film! All that was available was a finish line photograph of me behind a bunch of faster runners with their arms in a V, blocking me. Also, one of my smaller marathons didn't even have photographers. For the rest of my photo collection, someday I'd like to get a binder with clear plastic inserts and put the photographs in the inserts, in chronological order.
I have a few running pictures at my office. Yes, it is probably vain, but it is also a great motivator to keep prepared for the next marathon (March 24).
If you want a fancy frame for your metal, you can usually order one at the Expo the night before your race. These can be a regular frame or a shadow box. Either type would include an additional metal and an engraved plate with your name and time.
