I had ACL surgery about 2 years prior to my 1st marathon. Start training early - you may have to take a week or two off if it starts to ache excessively. Run on smooth, flat surfaces. Lifting weights will help to strengthen your quads & make running easier. Also, I needed a couple of days rest after long runs to let swelling in the need subside. I've since recovered fully & run 23 marathons since. Good luck to you.
