a year is ok to train for your first marathon ,but dont fall for the same old trick 99% of runners do trying to much at first your first two to 4 week should be easy runs no longer than 5 mile at a time even if you feel your going backwards stick with it as when long runs come you will look forward to them . a good book is complete runners guide by bob glover has everything you need to know . hope this helps and all the best in training. andy
