I am 60 years old and have had arthritis of the lumbar spines for over 10 years. During this time, I have been able to run marathons with reasonable comfort. For the last 6 months however, I have been experiencing cramping pain radiating from the lower back, down the left hip , left knee and ankle. The cramping can be very painful.

MRI result shows stenosis of the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebrae. I saw a neurologist who has advised that I give up running; he implied that running is damaging the said discs.

I am very reluctant to give up running completely. It would help me enormously to hear from anyone with similar problems/experiences.
