I just finished using the Higdon Novice program to complete marathon numero uno in Houston. Be sure to read the day by day descriptions he provides with the program. He says that you can flip flop Saturday and Sunday.

Don't be too concerned over a rigid adherence to the calendar he has laid out. Allow yourself a few extra weeks in the schedule for injury recovery, especially if you are older. Hopefully you won't need them, but if you give yourself some cushion in the schedule you might not be as tempted to try to run through some of the things that just need 7-10 days of rest to heal.

Follow his mileage progressions, but if you just feel like absolute crap one week, you can always repeat the week to give your body a chance to catch up.

The most important thing about your training is too enjoy it as much as you can.
