Strength training can be of value at the shorter race distances — 5K and 10K. But that does not necessarily imply weight lifting. I would encourage you to read this informative article:

If your desire is to get faster, perhaps what you really need is a 10k-specific training program. Are you familiar with Daniels' Running Formula?
