I just turned 47 myself and I'm scheduled for my first marathon next month. I have lost 10-15 pounds and have been running for almost two years. I started out unable to run 1.5 miles continuously and I've completed an 18 miler already in my training so it can be done from where you are starting.
GET GOOD SHOES from a store where running is their primary line. They will help prevent injury. Shin splints suck.
INCREASE YOUR MILEAGE GRADUALLY. Once again don't develop an over use injury.
REALIZE YOU WILL HAVE GOOD DAYS AND BAD. Some days a distance you covered the previous week with relative ease will nearly kill you. Don't get discouraged, just cover the miles, recover and try to figure out if diet, or lack of rest may have hurt you.
