Sore knees - do I need to lose weight?

I've been running pretty consistently for the last several years, and I was an athlete in high school, but this is my first time with long distance. Currently, I've just finished my second week of marathon training and did my long run for the week of 8 miles this morning. I feel great, but my knees ache like crazy. I assume this is normal to an extent, but was wondering if I should try to shed some weight to lessen the impact on my knees or if knee soreness is a necessary evil. I'm 28, 5'7", and weigh 145. Any thoughts?
