this is going to sound like a little anatomy lesson so stick with me... the lining of the uterine wall is what is expelled durring your period so if it doesn't all expell itself during the actual time of you period it is going to come out at somepoint. the added stress that you are putting on your body by training for a marathon is most likely causing your body to utilize its energy in other places and since the reproductive system is not vital for body function it can act in strange ways durring times of high stress. because you mentioned that it has been a little wierd for a while i would say talk to your doctor, but i don't think it is anything to worry about! i myself having never had a kid sometimes get really weird menstral stuff going on during times of high training and from the sound of it you nearing the peak of your training...
