Here is some information about phosphate provided by Ellen Coleman, RD, MA, MPH. Phosphates (part of ATP and CP). Claim: Improves endurance. Fact: Phosphate loading may increase intracellular phosphate levels and thereby increase oxidative metabolism. Kreider and colleagues found that phosphate loading (1 g of sodium phosphate, taken four times a day for three days) increased VO2Max, blood lactate threshold, maximum oxidative capacity, and enhanced endurance (20). More research on phosphate loading is needed.

Ellen is the author of two books (Bull Publishing) -- The Ultimate Sports Nutrition Handbook (1996) and Eating for Endurance, 3rd ed. (1997).
