Im training for my fourth marathon in 3 years. My long run Sunday was 17 miles and was about 55 seconds slower than my hoped for marathon pace (40 seconds slower than my pace in the last marathon). It was also a bit slower than last weeks 16-miler. I felt good through most of the run and a little tired towards the end: nothing unusual. After finishing I walked a few minutes to cool down and then went into the house. Ive recently been using chocolate milk (skim milk with chocolate syrup) as a recovery drink for long runs. I usually drink the chocolate milk after a few minutes of stretching, but today I skipped the stretching. Towards the end of the 10 oz. glass, my stomach began to feel funny and then I began to feel dizzy. I had a taste for a coke and poured some over ice. A few sips tasted good, but the dizziness was still a problem and I was worried that I might collapse. I grabbed a couple of ice packs out of the freezer and lay down on the floor with my legs elevated and ice on my forehead. I soon felt much better but lay there for a few more minutes. When I got up I was tired but overall felt OK again.
Im trying to figure out what was wrong. When I weighed myself later, I found Id lost about 5 pounds during the run (started at 159). Maybe I didnt drink enough and got dehydrated? Also, I donated blood Wednesday and possibly that was a factor. Id appreciate your thoughts on what happened and how I might avoid a repeat.
