Actually, thank you for making your original post concerning the affects of running 17 miles about 72 hours after giving blood ..... it stimulated me to investigate the subject further. As you probably know, when you give blood, a unit (1 pint) is drawn. The average person has between 1- -12 pints of bloodin the system. YOUR BODY WILL REPLACE THE BLOOD (PLASMA) WITHIN 48 HOURS AFTER YOU DONATE BLOOD PROVIDED THAT YOU PROVIDE YOUR BODY WITH THE PROPER AMOUNT OF LIQUIDS AND NUTRIENTS (With a significant amount of Iron in particular for people who do strenuous exercise like long distance runners ~ since Iron is involved with the transfer and utilization of oxygen). HOWEVER, IT WILL TAKE 4 - 8 WEEKS FOR YOUR BODY TO COMPLETELY REPLACE THE RED BLOOD CELLS THAT YOU DONATE. IF YOU WANT SOME EVEN MORE DETAILED INFORMATION, YOU CAN CALL TOLL FREE TO 1-888-482-5663 (Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center).

What also contributed to your situation after your 17 mile run was the fact that your body weight dropped by 3.2%, and you were definitely dehydrated concentrating your blood sugars. You should not lose more than 1% to 1.5% of your body weight in a safely hydrated run.

Again, thanks for your post .... it provided a parameter for others to consider.
