You are familiar with Lance Armstrong? He greatly underestimated the trauma to his legs that happens while running 26 miles on paved streets.

Get your legs ready for the task. This cannot be replicated by cycling. The marathon is a different endurance event, and places very different demands upon your legs, feet, knees, hips and lower back.
