I am an advocate of higher mileage however I do not run much further in training then 20 miles too often. If you do the right kind of training the taper will get you from 22 to the finish. I generally look at my long runs in terms of time. When I run a 22 miler in training it often comes out to my Marathon time. I don't go beyond this because it kills my training for the rest of the week. I usually run around three runs a weeks that last over 1 1/2 hours. Every two weeks I do a progression run of 18 - 20 miles with the last 5 at Marathon pace. The change in pace during the run seems to be less damaging then if I just went out and did a slow 20.
