I've run 9 marathons and have trained running 26 miles for a training run and up to 22 miles. I did better when I only ran the 22 mile training run. I felt fresher when I entered the real marathon than the time I did a 26 mile training run. Maybe it was just me, but that extra 4 miles before the real thing seemed to take a lot out of me and I didn't recover sufficiently.
