Hey, Kristie
Training for my first marathon a few years ago, my extended family was having a Labor Day picnic at a park with a 8.5 mile loop trail. I decided to get there early and run around 3 times just because I could and had the opportunity. As I went around, it occured to me how close 24.5 is to 26.2. The trail had 1/4 mile markers, so I reversed course during loop three long enough to put an extra 1.5 miles onto the three loops and finished with 26 miles. I felt really proud of myself, and was then confident I could do the actual race. In terms of getting me physically ready for the race, that day had no more value than if I had kept to my original goal or less. I've run 10 marathons since then and never felt the need or desire to do the full distance during the training.
