As a cyclist and qualified coach in Australia, i would say that you should start training the same way you would start for a goal run - periodisation and base training. For my group, I would say two months or so of base training at (average) 65-75% HRMax. After that just mix it up a little. Cruise for a while, then power up a hill or throw in some speed workouts and intervals.
Possibly consider finding a group ride in your local area and have a chat to them while riding one day - the best way to information is usually talking to someone who has been there. Hope this helps.
