I'm a relatively high mileage (60mpw) runner...I've had plantar/ heel spurs twice in 3 years. After my experiences, here is my advice for self-healing. Save yourself the money from going to the doctor, they can't do much anyway.
Don't walk around barefoot: keep you sneakers laced up tightly with your orthodics (if you have them) in them from the time you wake up to the time you go to sleep. Roll your foot over a frozen can of beans (feels great!) 5x per day, 10-15 minutes, and massage with your thumbs. Stretch. Wear heel cups until the pain subsides if you don't have orthodics. the most important factor in healing: NO RUNNING until you can walk quickly without pain. Take 3 weeks off running and bike/swim instead. You'll save yourself months of pain. Good luck! ~C
