Start with well fitting shoes, preferably fitted at a real running store. For a new runner I like the idea of setting a goal such as a 5K "fun run." Depending on where you live there might be plenty of these on any given weekend. You might check out halhigdon.com and look up the "novice" schedule to train for a 5K. Bottom line, build up your mileage gradually, don't be afraid to take walk breaks. Maybe run every other day? After several weeks of training, completing a fun run might just get you hooked.
