Wow, Deanna, you and your family have been through a lot. Instead of giving up, you come out with a determination to conquer a new challenge. I applaud you and your husband. I run the full distance. My wife started on the half about a year ago and ran her first in October, second in February, and is in training again for her third. Go for it and become your own good story to encourage others.
