Everyone says it, don't bank time in the first half

Don't "bank time" in the first half of the marathon. Running faster than target pace will help you deplete your glycogen stores and you'll bonk sooner. I am told by running gurus that for every minute you "bank" in the first half, you pay for with 3 minutes later in the same race. Not what you want.

I think most non-elite runners use the first few miles of the marathon as the warm-up. The most my friends who run will do is a half mile jog or walk down to the start, followed by a good stretch.
