On and off foot pain

Help.

I have an off and on pain in the top of my right foot. It is located about 3 inches up on the bone that extends from the big toe.

The best way to describe the pain is as if there was a dull nail stuck inside the left tongue of my running shoe and it was pressing against the foot. It hurts and then it goes away. I was contemplating covering the area with a pad. I've been running long runs and have no structural problems. Today it feels fine. Tomorrow it may hurt again.

Anyone else experience this?
