treadmill vs. outdoors runkelly 2/2/07 7:17:07 PM ET
Hi Sue, While I do most (actually all) of my longer runs outside, I will log some time each week on my treadmill during the winter. It's a GREAT option to have when you need it but it can be somewhat disadvantageous to do too much of your training on the treadmill- especially when it comes to long runs. I know that it is a position that alot of people are forced into but if you can help it at all maybe you should consider doing half of your long runs outside. There is such a big difference between the pounding a body takes while on a treadmill vs. what happens on pavement that you will feel like you've taken a beating when you get out there. It's not just you- that would happen to most people. There are so many factors... most obviously the "give" of the treadmill and controlled climate but also the wind, firmness of the road, undulation of the road, unevenness of the road, not having your pace controlled for you... even though you're taking an extra rest day all of those factors can make you feel wiped out. You know better than anyone what your limitations are and if you're not able to get outside then I certainly admire you for having the determination to train for 6 marathons mostly on a treadmill! If it's at all possible to hit the road a little more than you currently do you may find the transition between the two to be easier on your body.
