thank you all for your responses -- very helpful -- this is a great resource and i'll tune in and share more often --

i think part of the problem is i run at night -- i love to run at night -- i was seven miles into an eight mile run along one of my favorite routes along the beach in santa monica two weeks ago and the cops pulled up to me on the beach walk and told me a female jogger had been brutally raped the night before at the same time and same location i was running towards (the rapist hadn't been caught) -- they promptly put me in their car and drove me back to mine --

i love the freedom and psychological focus i get from running -- and i think that incident, coupled with my injury, challenged those two elements of what i love about the sport -- and yes, i should probably run in the morning -- and i never wear headphones -- i need to stay alert -- lots of crazies and bad drivers in LA -- even during the day --

again - thank you all for your suggestions and i'm just glad to know i'm not alone.......
