The hills are what you make of them

Last year was my first Boston experience. I learned some important lessons out there.

#1. Don't listen to anyone who tells you the first 14 miles are all downhill. There's more than enough rolling terrain to keep it challenging.

#2. They should rename it to Heartbreak Hills. The final hill really isn't anything to speak of...it's sort of like the big bully who's not so tough on his own but really tough with all his pals around.

#3. Run Boston at least once for the pure enjoyment of being there...don't worry about a PR just soak up the experience.

Back to the hills...if you've run a good race and left a little in the tank the hills aren't so punishing as they will be if you're already running on empty. Set a realistic goal pace and stick to it, don't get lured into running faster because it feels good...if you do, it won't feel good for long. Good Luck!
