Additional thoughts, Lin. My answer is not an endorsement that overdistance is for everyone. It is a very personal thing. And it especially depends on how you train the other 6 days of the week. In my case, overdistance always provided me with the physical AND (more importantly) mental stamina to run a strong 26.2 race.
I would caution you about running any portion of your long run at marathon pace. It is my belief marathon pace should be reserved for half marathons or 10 milers. It is essential that your distance runs be at a conservative pace, or you may well suffer the very injuries you seek to avoid.
