I just recently ran my first marathon and I was following the 18 week program but got sick after a half that I ran two thirds through. So I didn't do my first twenty miler until 3 weeks before my race and I did twenty each weekend up to race day. I took the four days off before the race and ran real well. I do agree that you should taper at least two weeks before if you have logged enough miles before.
