I ran Chicago in 1998. There were 20,000 starters. I lined up at the 3:30 level and crossed the line in 2 minutes. But the runners actually WALKED to the start line (first year that we used the chip) and you were in stride within 200m. Later, I had to stop to tie my shoes twice; I had to get to the sidewalk to do it but I never felt hindered by running in such a crowd, even though the 3:50 pace group folks had passed me by then. (I finished in 3:46...bad day). It was crowded, but everybody moved right along. So, I'd say that crowds were not a problem for the 3:30-3:50 folks.
