Vary the cross-training, grin & bear it.

Hamstring tears seem to be a classic risk for long distance runners. Three or four years ago, I had my episode and came back too soon, twice. Each time I found a new way to prompt the back of the leg to contract quickly and was back into the problem.

I found that varying my cross-training helped. Eliptical machines keep your legs under control - there is no kick to speak off. Stationary bicycles also avoided stressing the back of the leg. Neither is exciting so I did some of both with light weight work. Swimming also helped to provide variety.

Cross-training will keep you sufficiently in condition that when your leg is ready to run again, so is the rest of you. Changing what you do from day to day limits the boredom, but it's never going to be as good as running outside.
