After back problems forced me to take some time off in early 2000, I had horrible plantar fasciitis in my right foot when I tried to come back and train for a winter marathon. I tried massage, ice, inserts my orthopedist prescribed, the "foot log," everything. Here's what finally worked for me: -- I took four months completely off at the end of 2000. -- I wore a splint to support my foot at night, every night. -- When I started running again, on New Year's Day 2001, I wore a neoprene wrap around my right arch (available by the pair for about $20 from Road Runner Sports), over my sock whenever I ran. After about three months of pain-free running and as I ramped my mileage back up without any problems, I gradually phased out the wrap and the night splint. I had no trouble building up my mileage over the course of the spring and summer, ran an October marathon and now am in training for another one. Hope this helps a little -- best of luck!
