Often times, medial knee pain is a result of a weak vastus medialis (inner quad). This is the muscle that helps the knee cap track correctly in the femoral groove. When the lateralis is too strong or the medialis is too weak, the knee cap rubs the cartiledge in the femoral groove causing pain medially as opposed to ITB which is usually laterally. Stop running until pain subsides (usually a few days) and use ice and ibeuprofin. Do straight leg raises in sets of 10 to strengthen the medialis 2-3 times a day. Once pain is lessened, start running slowly at short distances and avoid hills. Ice after runs.
