Going into a race I usually have 3 times/goals in my head. The first is the conservative goal. If I hit this time, I should walk away from the race happy. Next is my realistic goal. This is a time I feel will be hard, but I should be able to run based on my recent training and other recent races. The final is more of a "dream" goal - if I run perfect and feel great, maybe I can get it type goal. I pace myself for about the first 3/4 of the race according to my realistic goal. In the last quarter I see where I'm at and adjust accordingly.
