When you have 50,000 more people who want to run than there is space for, what are you supposed to do? Go by Mark's rules of fairness in selecting a marathon field? I guarantee, 50,000 people are not going to be happy no matter what the process is.
Celebrities getting preferential treatment is a fact - NYC is not the only marathon that does it. Further, it is easy to make an argument for allowing it. There are many sponsors lined up for NYC paying lots of money to support the race, if the celebrities come out to run, it just raises the awareness of others and brings more attention to the race and the sponsor's products/services - and so they have incentive to keep participating and sponsoring in the future. That's why Lance and P. Diddy get to run if they want to.
NYRR makes the rules of the race very well known and by participating you agree to those rules. Mark had numerous opportunities to gain entry - he even lives in NYC - why didn't he just go and run 9 races in the park? All could have been 5 miles or less. Hell, NYRR has 3 or 4 races a month through the entire year. For some reason, out of the 50,000 people who did not get selected through the lottery, Mark justifies his actions by complaining it's not fair. Hey Mark - what about the 50,000 other people not selected through the lottery who want to run and think the selection process is not fair? There's a reason why you should be allowed to run but not them? I'm sure there are some who can boast of credentials even better than yours.
The size of the marathon is capped. You didn't get in. It's unfortunate, but everyone who wants to run simply can't.
"Because the number of applicants exceeds the number of spaces available, we are not able to accept all applicants. The majority of U.S. entrants, including athletes with disabilities, will be selected in a random lottery drawing on June 7, 2006."
As far as your 4 prior NYC Marathons - did you buy your entry into those? If you officially run 15 NYC Marathons, then you also get guaranteed entry.
I still hope nobody here or elsewhere offers you their bib. The site operators here should also remove all buy/sell posts for bibs especially when you have race representatives posting that it is against their race rules.
