Lucia, That is such a bummer. I can TOTALLY relate to how you're feeling, physically and emotionally. I've been near the end of a kick-butt training cycle only to find out that I'm pregnant and see my immediate racing goals go out the window. Emotionally it's tough to focus on something for so long and get so close and then not have it happen. Abdominal surgery is hard but you will recover quickly I'm sure. Your decision to skip Chicago should not be offensive to anyone- you're an experienced marathoner with goals and are looking to finish within a specific time frame. Are you considering a different marathon later in the fall/year? I think I would be very tempted to pick up where I left off in a month or so and then look to run one in December or January. I've heard that Las Vegas's new course is flat and fast (Dec), and Tampa (Feb) is another good option (I ran that in 05 and it's also flat and fast). Good luck with whatever you decide and with your recovery.
