Rather than trying to find a race that's similar to the Sydney course, the US Olympic Committee makes a deal with the race organizers who are hosting the race. Monies flow both ways and the choice of qualifying race is a combination of trying to find a race who will promote the olympic qualifying, is in the right timeframe and makes the right business arrangement. That was part of the problem with the Women's Trials in South Carolina. In that race, the course was hilly and the weather was hot - the result is that we'll only be sending one woman marathoner to Sydney. Hopefully the Pittsburgh course will be more forgiving on the men.
