Patellofemoral pain syndrome

I have been developing the classic signs of patellofemoral pain syndrome (aka runner's knee). Ice and aspirin help but the classic recommendation is to back off on the running.

My next race is at the end of September so I have a couple of long runs to go plus the usual other training. Although I've been running marathons for over a decade, I have no prior experience with this problem. Since it has crept up on me slowly, my assumption is that I can press on through to the end of the marathon without doing much incremental damage, but it would be useful if someone could confirm that.

It is a curious problem. It hurts most when walking down stairs (running down isn't possible). At the start of a run, it's uncomfortable, but as I warm up the pain goes away.

Thanks in advance for any information.
