There's a lot to be said for injesting some easily digested calories along the route, especially for those of us who are significantly slower than the elite runners. That said, the form in which you take the nutrition is a matter of personal choice. If you're comfortable with the energy drink on offer - most marathons provide some at the watering stands - that gives you carbs in an easier to digest form. There is also no sticky foil packet to deal with if you drink your carbs.
Finally, don't forget that gels are a relatively recent innovation. Lots of us ran marathons for years without grazing along the way. Given the choice of running with an upset stomach or giving up the sugar kick, I would do without the sugar.
