Posterior Knee Problems Help!!!!

I have a bit of a problem that is driving me insane. Please any feed back is appreciated. About a month ago I was running a mid-week short 5miler and my partner was sick. I was invited to run with a fellow runner and I accepted. I ran at his level and not my own. I really got a great work out, but that is where it should have ended. After stretching I decided to jog for a nice slow cool down. I began to feel a sharp pain on the right side of my right knee. The pain was not normal, but I thought I could jog it off. I continued on for about 100 yards until the pain surged suddenly and I stopped. I then had difficulty walking back. I began to walk slowly and walking became easier. Now after 4 and a half weeks the pain is now bearable but is still nagging with me if I attempt to run. I have been on an anti-inflammatory for the past 3 weeks and abstained from running until 3 days ago I tried to run and couldnt due to the reoccurring pain. I hope to recover so that I can attend a marathon in the end of Oct. Is that possible? How long could this take to heal? Is there any stretches or anything I can do to better my situation? Other than swimming is there any exercise I can do to keep in shape for a marathon? I know any of you can relate to my situation in wanting to run but cant. The feeling of helplessness is as a poison to my motivation. Thanks for listening.
