It is sports doctor time.
Pain on the outside of the knee might well be IT band syndrome, which, believe it or not, connects to the hips.
I know of one person who had this problem for months; his physical thearapist solved the problem by digging into his HIP with the back end of a screwdriver and getting some of the "pressure points" to release.

The good news is that if it is something simple, then you might be able to get in 8-10 weeks of good training.
