I stayed at a Howard Johnson last year. I think it was the Boston Bayside or something like that and it was only about 100 a night and the hotel had a free shuttle to the T-stop at UMass (Red line). This shuttle service was excellent and once you get on the subway in Boston, you can get anywhere - even the airport. I never had to take a cab.
