This gets overlooked, because they are not listed on the BAA website: consider several hotels south of Boston in Braintree and Quincy (Days Inn, Sheraton, Hampton, Marriot, Motel 6)located on or near Red Line subway stops (about 20 min ride to downtown, 30 to Copley Sq). You might need to take a short taxi ride from the hotel to a station, but you'll probably meet other runners at the hotels to hop a ride with. These hotels are $100 a night or so, some less, compared to the $200 plus you pay at some downtown. And forget about driving a car around Boston if you don't know the area--that's the kind of stress you don't need the day before a marathon.
