When I did Boston in 2000, we stayed out in Newton, a few miles beyond the 18 mile mark. On marathon day, the trains provided free transport to all runners. Just show the conductor your number and no problems. I don't know about the rest of the weekend, but it was nice to be able to ride the train there and back on marathon day. Transportation is acually proivided from the finish to the start, so finding a way to the finish is what you should be concerned about.

Good luck and enjoy the race.
