Hopkinton will give you the whole story, as he is a member of the BAA and lives near Boston, but I can provide a little information until Hop answers the call.
Transportation (school buses) is from finish line to start line (the same buses will carry your bag back to the finish line).
I can't imagine being around Boston without a car (but maybe I'm wrong). Last year I had a room not too far from the finish, by the Charles River. I found a ride to the start line and left my car at the hotel. The taxi fare from the finish line to the hotel was just crazy.
Good luck in Boston (it's such a wild race, so many people along the course). And here's unsolicited advice: do hill training, including downhill repeats, your quads will love you for it.
