Jill, I've had the same experience, but I don't have any real good advice. Runner's World had an advice column with this question this month, but I couldn't find the article online. 2 things I do: 1) Run near tourist sites/ shopping areas. There are a lot of people who might stare at you, but they are generally not the sneering jeering crowd. 2) Run in a group. Although you might not be able to find girls on campus to run with, there is almost certainly a running club in the area. Google the town name and "running club". RCs are great because they have such a mix of abilities and the runs are schedules every week no matter what, so you don't have to worry about them ditching on you at the last minute if they stayed out late the night before. Coolrunnings.com also has a running club locator that might have a listing for your area.

Good luck!
