Thanks for the advice. I plan to do the same sort of thing. I will write down a straight line projection just a tad faster than my goal and an "acceptable" faster pace which should be about 15-20 seconds below that goal time.
I've decided to create a strip and cover it shipping tape. I plan to use the front and back to record the goal and the fastest time per mile and I'm going to put it inside my watch band.
The marathon is a short 3 weeks away and I'm charged up to run it.
