I have also created laminated wrist bands...and for the very same reason. To keep from going out too fast. It works!

It is better located on your wrist, next to your watch. Casio makes running watches that record each mile split. After the race you can compare your target times against actual splits.

While 7 minute pace may feel slow in the early going, it can feel like a sprint after 20 miles. The band will keep you on target the whole way.
