Caffeine is an ergogenic aid. I used to be able to rattle off the physiology behind it but it's been a number of years since I was in graduate school so I'll have to dig up my exercise phys books to brush up. I'll try to get back on that... As far as carbonation goes, it could be hard on the stomach depending on how sensitive you are. If you want to test it try getting your pop flat prior to consuming on/before runs.
