In truth, participating in marathons is not about winning...it's about improving. In fact, that is what life in general is about... improving yourself.

In the 70s, when Frank Shorter was the reigning king of the sport, a sports reporter marveled at his many marathon accomplishments. Frank replied that the real marvel, in his view, were all the dedicated marathoners with the fortitude to train and run 4 and 5 hour marathons.The '72 gold medalist knows there is nothing 'mediocre' about that.
